Mascara Recommendations & Comparision – product reviews

So I have noticed that roughly once a year, I get a new full sized mascara. The rest of the year, I live off of making my favorites last or I use travel/sample sizes that I get from a variety of places. A year ago, I was introduced to Stila’s HUGE Extreme Lash mascara via Ipsy and fell in love with how it made my lashes look! But, when I went to Ulta to get my own full sized tube for Christmas, they had sold out completely! And that is when I found my next favorite from Too Faced. I bought a tube of the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara and found that I liked it almost better than the Stila mascara!

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara and Milk Cosmetics Ubame Mascara

This year, thanks to a gift card to Sephora, I picked up a brand new tube of Better Than Sex Mascara and have been thoroughly enjoying having a fresh new mascara to add to my makeup routine. However, as I have kept an eye on major brands’ Christmas sales, I stumbled across a deal at Stila that included a full sized tube of HUGE Extreme Lash mascara, eyeliner, blush/lip cream, and lip gloss all for $15! I was shocked and quickly snatched it up. I went back later that day and it had sold out completely.

The crazy thing is that now I have both of my favorite mascaras in front of me, I have a clear preference for one over the other. One of the thing that makes me like both of these mascaras is the hour glass shaped brush. I feels like it exaggerates and draws out and up the lashes in a way other mascaras I’ve tried don’t. I already have dark and mostly full eyelashes, so I don’t need a LOT of help when it comes to emphasizing my eyelashes, but I do love the way these mascaras do darken my lashes more. Anyway, after having almost two kids, my lashes have changed a good bit (mainly gotten thinner). Another reason I do like both of these mascaras is you really don’t need more than one coat for each eye and that’s with wiping the excess mascara off the brush!

Alright so now which is my preferable mascara?? I’d have to say it’s the Better Than Sex one! They are both really good, and I do really like Stila’s mascara, but the Too Faced mascara’s brush has a more defined hour glass shape and it does go on a teensy bit smoother than the Stila mascara! I do highly recommend both mascaras still. For their price and the fact that they really do last for quite awhile, I’d say these are still my top top favorites out of all of the mascara I’ve tried. And I’ve tried both high end mascara and the low end mascara (low end = low cost).

If you’re looking for a new mascara to try or to replace an old tube, check out Stila’s HUGE Extreme Lash mascara or Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara!

Product Reviews – Birchbox, 2 boxes

Hi Beauties,

It’s a dreary slightly snowy day, so it feels like a good day to spit out a blog post. However, to brighten up my day, and hopefully yours, I snatched a Birchbox deal at the end of October where I got two boxes for the price of one. Now with this kind of deal (I have managed to get this one other time a year and a half ago) you never know what the second box is going to be! I was so pleasantly surprised when I opened up the big box from Birchbox and discovered the bonus box was their Rifle Paper Co. box! I am not going to be renewing my subscription to Birchbox at the present time, but I am glad I got it this past month. The samples were a really nice mix of eh not so sure about this to wow I really like this.

Okay, so to start of with, let’s talk about the November box. The theme of November was The Finishing Touch – all about those extra, just-because details that make all the difference. When I glanced at the list of samples I was getting, I was excited to see an Amika product was included. At first I thought it was my favorite dry shampoo, but upon further inspection, it is their dry conditioner. I didn’t even know such a product existed, but I was willing to give it a shot. The second product was the Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil from Bumble and Bumble. I have gotten this product in the past and found it to be too heavy for my hair. So this was one of the eh not so sure products.

Next down the line was a teaser from Coastal Scents’ new Blush & Bronzer palette. This sample included a blush and what looks like either a dark highlighter or a very light bronzer. I haven’t tried this one out yet since I am currently loving on my Pixi by Petra contour palette right now. A Dr. Jart+ product was included called Ceramidin Cream and while I haven’t tried it yet either, I am planning on giving it a shot once my current night cream product runs out.

Now, on to my favorite product from this box. I have heard of Milk Makeup off and on over the past two years, but had yet to try one of their products. I was really excited to see this Ubame Mascara included and couldn’t wait to try it. I just picked up a replacement for my favorite Better Than Sex Too Faced mascara, but have recently had to get rid of all my other mascaras because they had either dried up or run out. I was curious to see how the triple-ball applicator would compare to the hourglass applicator on the Better Than Sex mascara. Honestly, I really like the Milk mascara. It goes on super smooth, doesn’t flake, and I rather like the rich dark color.

When I opened the Rifle Paper Co. box, I was so excited to see a lip crayon and another Amika product! This product was their touchable hairspray and it seems to be holding up to the Amika standard I’ve come to know.

I have heard of Derma e products before but had never tried them, and for the other three products, those were new brands as well. I tried the derma e 2-in-1 charcoal mask the first night and really liked it. It dried fairly quickly, but it didn’t make my skin feel uncomfortably tight and it washed off easily which was a bit of a surprise.

img_3467

^ there’s the charcoal mask partially dried.

img_3532I received two RMS Beauty ultimate makeup remover wipes and have yet to use them. I’m going to save them for when I’m in the hospital after my son is born! I’m excited to see that the wipes contain coconut oil as that’s something I’ve used many times to remove eye makeup in particular. The Beauty Crop PBJ Smoothie Stick in Guava Nice Day is a beautiful mauve lipstick color and what I like most about it is that it lasts for a long time on your lips, is easy to apply, and the color seriously is really nice! It also doesn’t feel dehydrating to my lips and almost feels like a lip balm instead of lip color.

The TOCCA Crema da Mano (hand cream) didn’t even register with me that it was a hand cream until this morning! My hands get painfully dry during the winter and I have already been having trouble finding lotion to keep my hands from getting irritated. This hand cream has a delicate scent and while it felt a little oily as I was putting it on my hands, it has dried with a  soft finish. I like it and I may just end up picking up a full sized container of it!

So there you have it; my reviews of Birchbox products for the month of November. I can’t believe December starts in just a few short days and I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

My Favorite Summer Products

Hi Beauties,

On Thursday, Beauties on Fire will officially start! I’m looking forward to having a weekly post already lined up since blogging is a little iffy for me right now. (P.s. go check out Elizabeth’s blog to find out how you can join up in this collaboration!!)

I realized I haven’t done a favorite product post recently, so I think it’s time to do that. I have been keeping my makeup very clean and simple lately, adding in maybe cat eyes or a vibrant lipstick every once in awhile. One of the things I’m sticking with consistently this summer is doing eyebrows, using eyelash curlers, and mascara. That’s the most basic that I get and honestly, I really like it. Okay, so now, here’s the list of the products I’ve been using nonstop and of course, WHY!

Starting at the first product, Eyebrows!

Eylure Defining and Shading Firm Pencil, Dark Brown. I have come to adore this eyebrow pencil and it is by far my favorite out of everything I’ve tried. I have also been able to figure out the best way to do my eyebrows and honestly can have them done in a minute. This may sound odd to some of you (probably most) but I always do my eyebrows first. Even before I put my primer one. This way, if I mess up, or need to correct lines, I can do that with whatever foundation and/or powder I use on my face for the day. This pencil is easy to us, easy to sharpen, and is a rather creamy formula. It also stays all day. And it’s not even half the price of Benefit’s brow products! Which, okay slay me now, I’m not really the biggest fan of. Granted, I haven’t tried very many of their new line of brow products, but honestly, the brow pencil I tried paled in comparison to this one from Eylure.

Next comes….Primer!

Maybelline Baby Skin Primer. I swear by this primer. It’s smooth, silky, DOES NOT have silicon in it, and it helps protect my skin from breaking out as well as keeping whatever else I put on my face from sliding off. I use about a pea sized portion, and apply it with my beauty sponge. NEVER my fingers. *hint hint never use fingers hint hint* Using a primer of any sort helps give your foundation, bb cream, cc cream, or even just powder, something to grab on to and hold while you go about your day. This is especially helpful and important when wearing makeup in the summer. It’s so hot and sticky (depending on where you live) and your makeup sweating off is a very real fear. Primers can help prolong makeup on a sweating face.

Okay, what’s next. Oh yeah, Foundation/BB cream/CC cream/Illuminator

Revlon Photoready Skinlights, Bare Light and Rimmel Wake Me Up BB Cream Radiance Foundation, Light.  Alright, so these are the two foundation “like” products I’ve been using simultaneously. I picked up the Revlon illuminator quite a while ago and it wasn’t until about two months that I really started using it. I got it originally to use as a highlighter and really didn’t care for it. But now, I use it as an extra for whatever foundation I’m using and it gives such a depth to an otherwise flat-ish finish. I usually use about a penny’s worth of the two combined so it ends up being a very light layer of foundation on my face. I’ll add more of the Revlon illuminator than the Rimmel BB cream as I like more of an almost glow-y look for summer time. Using my beauty sponge, I’ll dab and blend these two all over my face. And here’s a quick tip for you. Don’t blend in right away. Dab and leave it looks thick on your face but as soon as the product starts to set/dry, that’s when you can blend it in for a perfect finish. I discovered this by accident and have started taking these steps every time I apply foundation now. It really helps create a smooth finish! Also, the reason I’m really like the Rimmel cream right now is because it has SPF in it. I HATE putting sunscreen on and especially abhor putting it on my face. But when I can put on a bb cream that actually have 20 SPF in it, that’s a win win for me!

Now for the decorating! Blush/Bronzer/Highlighters!

Jelly Pong Caribbean Sun Bronzer Duo and Essence Cream to Powder Highlighter, Bright Up Your Life

(I have two different products I’ve been using consistently for blush/highlighters. I can’t find the second product on Amazon, but here’s a picture of it. Target actually sells it.)

Okay, as I’ve actually gotten a nice little tan on my face and arms this summer, the darker colors of this bronzer duo actually do not both me, nor do they feel very dark. The darker brown is a really nice and perfect contouring shade for me, so that’s been fun to actually get some nice shadows! I wasn’t sure about the cream to powder highlighter, but it has also surprised me. It’s a beautiful subtle shimmer and I always apply the highlight first before blush. This helps create a not so in your face highlight and it gives something to blend your blush into. Sometime soon I want to do a “how to apply blush according to your face shape” post! I’ve had a lot of fun figuring out where to apply blush correctly on my face to enhance my features and not drag them down. Alright, so for the highlighter, I apply it at the very top of my cheek bones and sweep up following the lines of my eyes. I’ll then dab it on the tip of my nose, do a faint streak down my nose, and then a little at my cupids bow in my upper lip and a little on my chin. I actually avoid my forehead because I’ve noticed using a highlighter on my forehead actually makes it more oily. For the blush and contour, I’ll sweep the blush from the outer corner of my eye, almost at the top of my cheek bone and sweep up towards the top of my ear. For the contour, I can easily find the shadows of my cheeks now, so I’ll place some on those shadows, staying in line with the outer corner of my eyes, then sweep up towards the top of my ears and down towards the corner of my mouth.

Next, it’s Finishing Powder!

Essence All About Matt fixing compact powder. I really like this translucent finishing powder. My favorite part about it is that it’s only $3.99 from Target (and I believe at Ulta). It’s a nice blender and helps soften any drastic lines I may not have blended all the way. Another tip here, always apply your mascara last as it won’t pick up the finishing powder. I also do not blend with sweeping motions when applying finishing powder. I literally dab it and pat it on to my face. You don’t want to disturb or shift anything you already have on your face (blush, highlights, bronzer, contouring…) so take your time when applying finishing powder!

And last but not least, Mascara!

Stilla Glamoureyes, Black and Urban Decay Perversion, Black. I recently picked up a free travel sized Urban Decay Perversion mascara and wasn’t sure if I’d like it. As with any product I suddenly hear a ton of hype about, I’m cautious about trying it simply because of the hype (especially when said hype is coming from the parent company itself). But lo and behold, I am finding myself gravitating towards that mascara even more than my beloved Glamoureyes from Stilla. It’s smooth, does not leave huge clumps of excess mascara behind, and I find my lashes are extremely well defined once I apply the Perversion mascara.

Alrighty, so these are all my current favorites for the summer! Keep your eyes peeled for Thursday’s Classic Beauty post collaboration for Beauties on Fire!!

Product Review – Mascara, mood lipgloss, and Julep products

Hi Babes,

How’s your week going for ya? We’re finally back to warmer weather here and needless to say, we’re all quite happy to have the windows open again and to not be huddled under blankets.

I picked up a few new products recently, one being a mascara from Rimmel London. I chose this mascara because of how similar the brush is to Too Faced Better Than Sex. I’ll do a specific compare post comparing those two later. Another product I got recently is from L.A. Colors and is a mood lipgloss. Come to find out, it is probably very similar to NYX’s mood lipgloss. I will have to get one of those and compare it to the one from L.A. Colors at another time.

The other two product I reviewed are from Julep. Now I’m not terribly impressed with Julep’s option for Maven boxes, nor do I like their eye shadow. However, I had a free box to try and I decided to get a tube of lipstick and some eyebrow cream powder. The lipstick is called Girl Code and the eyebrow cream powder shade is in Rich Brown. I do like them both, but I am finding that the lipstick is very drying. I shall have to see if I can find a remedy for that.

I also picked up this travel pouch from Amazon as well as Curl Talk Ouidad from Amazon as well.

Product Review – Physician’s Formula Cosmetics

I have always seen Physician’s Formula Cosmetics at Target but had never gotten any. I guess I used to just brush off that brand as one that I wouldn’t like. I was partially right! When I saw this kit on Amazon, I decided to give it a shot since it combined several products and saved me a lot of money.

(click on the picture for the product on Amazon)

It came with a small palette (I really was expecting something twice the size!), two eyeliners, and a dual-ended mascara in black and a weird brown. The palette itself is roughly the size of an iPhone 5s, but it quite narrower than that. I found it difficult to use with an eyeshadow brush as well as a eyeshadow sponge like applicator. I will say that the colors looked so much better and showed up a lot more on my skin when I tried applying them wet. The other thing I did not like about the palette, besides the fact that the colors are so weak, is that it is difficult to get any to stick to a brush to sponge applicator, much less apply them to your eyelids.

The eyeliners on the other hand are beautiful. I love the black one and it might be my new go to black pencil eyeliner. It is very smooth and goes on really well. When I did a swatch test yesterday, I had difficulty getting it to come off of my skin. So awesome staying power and it’s also a pearly black instead of a flat or matte black, which I prefer when it comes to black pencil eyeliner. The brown or even taupe eyeliner is the same consistency but it really doesn’t show up on my skin at all. I did just have an idea…I may try it as a brow pencil before I give up on the product.

The mascara is okay. It’s not great but it’s definitely NOT bad. The brush/spiky thing reminds me of Maybelline’s Volum’ Express The Rocket mascara. I am not fond of mascara brushes that look like this one, but it works okay.  Now I have no clue why someone would want to use a taupe colored mascara over their black. I did that in the video (as that’s what the “instructions” on the box instructed) but I didn’t notice anything different.

Alright, now here’s the video. Also, ignore my mention of “have a great weekend.” Apparently I’m really ready for the weekend!

Deal Alerts!

Happy Friday!

Have an awesome weekend, all!

Stila Glamoureyes Mascara

S507010001.0

Happy Monday!

To kick the week off right, I tried a new mascara I got from Stila Cosmetics called Glamoureyes. I happened to check their website a few weeks ago, and managed to snag the mascara for $6! It is now $15 but is originally sold for $22. I am a big fan of Stila’s HUGE extreme lash mascara so I figured that trying another one of their mascaras wouldn’t hurt!

FullSizeRender (1)

I was pleasantly surprised at how much the mascara made my lashes plump up instantly! I had tried the mascara as soon as I got it but didn’t think I liked it. I am glad I gave it another shot because I think it will be one of my go-to mascaras.

Anyway, I’ll be posting soon about the newest palette I got from Julep. In the meantime, have an awesome week!

p.s. I highly suggest keeping an eye on your favorite high end brand’s website as this is the time of year when the spring collections are being brought in and they’re phasing out some of last season’s makeup. Lots of deals and discounts!

Mascara Review & Compare

IMG_0801

Hi Babes,

As I explained in the video, this year had kind of started rough for me at least and Riley’s been really busy! We’ve both had sick (multiple times) kids and I just had surgery two weeks ago. The weeks leading up to the surgery were really rough physically for me, but now I’m feeling a ton better!

Anyway, in our last review, Riley and I talked about a mascara we really liked from Stila Cosmetics called HUGE extreme lash. We both this mascara from our birchbox, and Riley actually got a full sized tube of it for Christmas! I liked it so much, I went to Ulta and tried to get one for myself, but they were all out. That was when I noticed that Too Faced Cosmetics has a very similar mascara and I decided to get that one instead. I have fallen in love with Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara and here’s why.

have a great weekend!!
